Three Great Benefits of Microdermabrasion

If you’ve ever heard the term “Microdermabrasion” you may have thought it may be a rough and painful skin treatment, but in actuality it is a gentle sanding of the skin's surface that removes the buildup of dead skin cells.
This is achieved by using either microcrystals sprayed over the skin through a tube or stainless-steel wand or diamond microdermabrasion (a newer procedure) which is a little bit cleaner and uses a closed loop system so that the crystals are then vacuumed back into the machine and not the air.
Using an easy to understand analogy, microcrystals are like fine sandblasting to the skin versus diamond tip which is more like fine sandpaper. Patients who have dull skin, melasma (hyperpigmentation), superficial acne scars and acne discoloration are perfect candidates for a microdermabrasion treatment.
With diamond microdermabrasion the exfoliation and the suction work in tandem.  While the exfoliation blasts away dead skin cells, the suction works to stimulate the dermis (outer layer of skin) and jumpstarts a restructuring of the skin. This repairing response from the skin can help it to grow thicker, smoother and retain more of its elasticity.
Microdermabrasion to the face usually takes just over 30 minutes.
So what are the benefits of microdermabrasion? Here are three.

Microdermabrasion Gives You Healthier, Clearer Skin

As we age, our skin automatically sheds less dead skin cells.  This process is called “desquamation”.  Over time, this excess skin buildup can cause not only discoloration, but can lead to clogged pores and blemishes.
By exfoliating away the dead skin cells, the skin can dramatically appear more luminous, have fewer fine lines and wrinkles and a more even skin tone.  It can also help to minimize the appearance of some shallow acne scars.

Microdermabrasion Requires Little Downtime

Another great benefit of microdermabrasion is that the exfoliation procedures can be done with little to no down time.  Unlike some other treatments, when you have microdermabrasion, you don’t have to sacrifice recovery time as microdermabrasion is considered a non-invasive skin treatment which makes it an ideal skin treatment for patients with busy schedules.
Microdermabrasion is a safe alternative to chemical peels and other treatments.  It rejuvenates the top layer of skin without the use of lasers or needles.  Microdermabrasion has been known to increase circulation within the blood and lymph nodes deep within the skin.
The more blood and oxygen that is supplied to the skin cells, the healthier your skin will look and feel.
Skin cell production is vital in the early stages of aging between 35 and 50 and can produce a more youthful glow.

Microdermabrasion Is Low-Risk

Microdermabrasion carries minimal risks of side effects if aftercare instructions are followed including the application of moisturizers and the use of great skin products.
This professional procedure is relatively low in cost and can be repeated every 2 to 3 weeks with amazing results.
Much like brushing your teeth, skin hygiene is just as important.  Regular microdermabrasion treatments temporarily enable our skin to absorb nutrients from good skin care products and assists the skin in creating more collagen.  Collagen production helps the skin to become more supple and smooth in texture and pore sizes can shrink after just a couple of treatments.  Inflammation is reduced when bacteria is unclogged from pores and crevices in the skin.
Microdermabrasion is a suitable choice because the results can be noticed after just one treatment and will not cause scarring.
You can expect a mild pink appearance or flush to the skin that will gradually resolve over the next couple of minutes to hours. Your skin may also feel a little tight and dry.
As most skin treatments go, microdermabrasion works best in combination with sunscreen and other facial washes and creams. With proper home care, clients will see a dramatic improvement in the appearance of their skin.  Soothing and hydrating your skin with a high quality nutrient rich moisturizer after a microdermabrasion treatment is highly recommended, as well as sunscreen to help prevent your skin from becoming hypersensitive.
Getting to relax and seeing real results is getting the best of both worlds.  Scheduling a pre-treatment consult with your technician can help answer any important questions or concerns that you may have.
